The latest survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter shows Galway city has lost the ‘Clean’ status it gained earlier in 2017 and is ‘moderately littered’ in 30th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. Ballybane also fell, from 24th to 38th, and is deemed ‘littered’.

Sean Kyne TD, Minister with responsibility for the Inland Fisheries Sector, has this week announced that 18 angling development projects in the Galway region have been awarded funding of some €275,000 by Inland Fisheries Ireland to improve angling access in the area. The Minister made the announcement while visiting ongoing river enhancement projects on the Grange River, a major tributary of the Clare River that runs through counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. The works have been made possible by a unique collaboration between Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Office of Public Works (OPW), Cairde na Chláir and the Clydagh Foundation.

Galway City Comhairle na nÓg is a youth council for young people aged 12 to 18 living or attending school in Galway city. Each year at the youth council’s AGM more than 100 young people from across the city attend and vote on an issue that is important to young people.

The final Galway City Council meeting of 2017 was held last Monday and had some interesting issues to relay to you. Three sets of Minutes again dominated the early part of the agenda taking over 75 minutes to get through. Although this is a radical improvement it continues to be a huge waste of time. If every councilor wishes to speak for three minutes and seek further clarification on each matter under discussion then we are doomed to spend considerable wasted time on non-productive matter discussing what has happened in the past at the expense of what can be done in the future.

Local homeless charity Galway Simon Community is calling on landlords to consider accepting HAP (Housing Assistant Payment) from people accessing their services who are struggling to find rental properties under the scheme. The appeal comes as the Simon Communities study Locked Out of the Market IX, released this week, found that there were no properties available in Galway City within the Rent Supplement/HAP limits.
